Book my trip to Devil' s bridgeSituated in the Uri canton, the Devil's Bridge, or "Teufelsbrücke" in German, spans the Reuss River in the Schöllenen Gorge. This stone bridge, steeped in history, has been a crucial connection between northern and southern Switzerland for centuries. But beyond its functional importance, the bridge is enveloped in captivating tales.
Legend has it that the original bridge was constructed by the devil. The Uri residents found it nearly impossible to build a bridge across the ferocious Schöllenen Gorge. So, in desperation, they sought the devil's assistance. He agreed to build the bridge but demanded the soul of the first being to cross it. Once built, the clever villagers sent a goat across, tricking the devil. Enraged, he intended to destroy the bridge with a massive stone, but an old woman marked a cross on the rock, making it impossible for him to lift. That stone, known as the "Devil's Stone," weighs an astonishing 220 tons and still rests nearby.
Modern visitors to the Devil's Bridge can also view its predecessors. There are two bridges at the site: the older, lower bridge from the 13th century, now mostly a ruin, and the newer bridge from 1830, which is still in use today.
