Visit Karlstejn Castle in 2024

Karlštejn Castle, constructed in the 14th century, was originally designed to safeguard the imperial regalia and the Bohemian/Czech crown jewels. The fortress' strategic location, robust walls, and innovative defensive measures made it virtually impregnable, earning it a place in military and architectural history. The castle's multiple tiers rise like a dream above the surrounding forests, a three-level composition of royal residence, Chapel of the Holy Cross, and the Great Tower.
Each section of the castle serves a specific purpose. The Imperial Palace housed the emperor and his entourage, the Marian Tower was reserved for the empress, and the monumental Great Tower stored invaluable treasures. Its Chapel of the Holy Cross, decorated with semi-precious stones and panels of gold, was intended as a private place of worship for the emperor.
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous renovations, but it retains its original Gothic character. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, or simply an explorer, Karlštejn Castle offers a captivating journey back in time.
