Krivoklat Castle, one of the oldest and most significant castles in the Czech Republic, is an enthralling complex built during the 12th century. Initially serving as a royal hunting lodge, the castle was expanded and fortified over the centuries, reflecting various architectural styles including Romanesque and Gothic. It has been the residence of Bohemian kings and a prison for high-ranking nobles.
The castle complex features an impressive keep, a chapel, and several exhibition halls that house a rich collection of hunting artifacts, medieval weapons, and art. A particularly eye-catching part of the castle is its ornate library, containing more than 52,000 volumes.
Visitors can also explore the dark history of the castle in its prison and torture chambers. Walking through the halls and rooms, one can almost hear the echoes of the past, from royal footsteps to the lamentations of imprisoned nobles.
