Visit Miramare Castle in 2025

Its white battlements and towers, surrounded by a lush green park, create a fairy-tale-like appearance that stands in contrast to the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. The romantic setting of Miramare is complemented by a love story intertwined with longing and tragedy. Miramare Castle was commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria, younger brother to Emperor Franz Joseph I, for his beloved wife, Archduchess Charlotte of Belgium. Designed by Carl Junker between 1856 and 1860, the castle combines a variety of architectural styles, predominantly reflecting the Romantic tastes of the Archduke.
The interiors, meticulously preserved, offer a glimpse into the life of European aristocracy during the 19th century. Notably, many of the rooms still showcase the original furnishings, reflecting the eclectic and international taste of the Archduke.
But beneath its opulent façade lies a tragic tale. Not long after the castle's completion, Maximilian was persuaded to accept the title of Emperor of Mexico. It was a short-lived reign that ended with his execution, leading to the mental decline of the grieving Charlotte.
The surrounding park, spanning 22 hectares, is another highlight of Miramare. Its design reflects the Archduke's worldly travels, showcasing a blend of Italian, English, and Austrian garden elements. Not to be missed is the "Castelletto," a smaller structure within the grounds where the couple temporarily resided during the castle's construction.
