Visit Werfen Ice Caves in 2024

These mesmerizing ice caves stretch for over 42 km and were formed by the Salzach River as it cut through the limestone mountains. The Eisriesenwelt, as it's known in German, opens its doors for tours from May to October. Once you arrive at the parking area, a cable car and a moderate hike will take you to the entrance of the cave.
Inside, you'll find jaw-dropping ice formations that resemble waterfalls, towers, and even palaces. The caves maintain a temperature around freezing, so warm clothing is essential. Tour guides lead you through an hour-long tour, lighting the formations with magnesium lamps that make the ice glow in the darkness. Photography is not allowed inside, so you’ll truly have to be present to absorb this unforgettable experience. The caves are a natural phenomenon that brings science, beauty, and mystery together in an underground, frozen landscape.
