Wewelsburg Castle is a 17th-century fortress that holds a complex history as layered as its stone walls. Located in the Paderborn district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the castle is unique for its distinct triangular design. Originally built as a secondary residence for the local prince-bishops, it later had multiple functions ranging from a prison to a school, and, most controversially, a center for Nazi SS activities during World War II.
The castle is now home to two museums: the Historical Museum of the Prince Bishopric of Paderborn and the Wewelsburg 1933–1945 Memorial Museum. The latter provides a stark look at the castle's darker days under Heinrich Himmler's command as an ideological center for the SS.
Besides the museums, the castle itself is an architectural wonder featuring three imposing towers and a captivating courtyard. For those interested in the esoteric, the castle is also said to be filled with occult symbolism, though much of this is tied to its Nazi past and thus the subject of ethical debates.
